These Intermediate classes are open to all who want to practice contemporary
dance technique and release fundamentals. We will move with a heightened awareness
of our connection to the floor, weight, articulation of joints, and sequential
movement of the pelvis & spine. There is an emphasis on how gravity is
significant in initiating movement and using momentum to propel us in space
in both the technique warm up and in our traveling phrases. This class’s
goal is to help the dancer re-discover their body’s internal connections
through a process of still and active alignment.

The class fuses Release Technique, improvisation, funky footwork, and is
athletic and physical. All levels welcome. The class begins with different
kinds of mind and body centering work including massage, chi-gung meditations,
and yoga. It gently warms the body and gets you shaking and grooving by the

Hassan Christopher’s Contemporary modern Technique
class challenges the dancer to integrate their entire being as an instrument
of expression. His movement pushes you to use you your imagination, intelligence
and sensitivity while going for extreme physicality that develops ones sense
of timing, athleticism, articulation, release, and use of momentum. This class
is designed for the dancer who is interested in more than just movement. Participants
should be prepared to explore voice, partner work, and improvisation as means
to increasing their range of expression.

The NEW LULA WASHINGTON DANCE THEATER studio is open and
functioning with classes focused on dancers interested in modern dance. For
the entire month of August Lula is presenting daily ballet
class for modern dancers — taught by Lowell Smith, former lead soloist from
Dance Theater of Harlem, and former director of the Dance Theater of Harlem
School. Lowell is teaching professionals ( 10-11:30 am M-F), but also youth/teen

with a full body stretching sequence designed to bring the dancers into the
space and into themselves. The stretching sequence will be followed by a center
floor technical warm-up, which will address such movement principles as alignment,
placement, connection to the floor, and a connection to one’s center/core.
Traveling and center floor combinations will focus on fluidity of movement
through expansive use of space. Technique system is influenced by a blend of
Graham, Limon, Cunningham, Jazz, Hip-Hop, and release based work.

of contact. We will explore different ways of approaching contact improvisation,
such as being inspired by sensation, visual form, sound or intellect. We will
fall in love with the floor and surprise ourselves in lifts we didn’t know
were going to happen
Dealing with the Consequences of Flight
These classes will use an exercise I call Contact Evolution to explore the
surprisingly gentle consequences of flight without a specific goal. The fun
will be in the spirals that bring us to the earth and the moments of balanced
stillness that we had no idea were in store.

middle of January.

Body Weather Laboratory is a research forum open to anyone interested in
investigating expression through the body within different environments. A
demanding attitude toward a thorough reexamination of the body and movement
is a main theme in the training. The training consists of three-parts: 1) rigorous
mind/body, muscle/bone training; rhythmical and dynamic. 2) A series of specific
stretching and relaxation exercises concerned with breathing and alignment.
The work is done in couples, exchanging passive and active roles. 3) Sensitivity
and awareness training to sharpen focus and develop the scope of understanding
through the body; discovery of movement from images.

A demanding attitude towards a thorough re-examination of the body and movement
is a main theme in all aspects of this training. Originally founded by Min
Tanaka in Japan 1978, the BWL workshops are open to anyone interested in
investigating expression through the body within different environments.
The work encompasses sensitivity training and discovery of movement from
images.

For people interested in developing their own approaches to making a dance
in a supportive and disciplined environment. People will be encouraged to bring
in ideas that they may have wanted to work with. For those already in the midst
of making a dance, we will encourage you to go the next step in it’s development.
Learn the discipline of committing to your own working process. We will be
working, showing work and giving each other feedback and support to find creative
solutions to developing and completing our ideas. While you may or may not "complete" a
dance, the goal of the workshop is to get your project in motion. All genres
of dance making are encouraged. Students will be encouraged to work, think,
and engage in their projects between classes. We will begin each class with
a half hour warm up. The workshop will end in an open showing in the theater.
